Four Yearly School Review
It is hard to believe we are almost at the end of Term 1. A significant feature of Term 1 was the School Review conducted by the Department of Education in Week 5. This is a strategic review process that all schools undertake every four years. I simply could not be prouder of the work of our staff that was acknowledged by the external school review team. The level of teacher expertise and the authentic commitment to support the care and wellbeing needs of our students and families was celebrated through the School Review process. Part of the School Review process is firming up the five school improvement priorities to frame our next four years of strategic actions. The results of our school review are listed in the infographic below. Thank you to all the parents and community members who spoke to the external reviewers during the three days of the school review.
Parent/Teacher Interviews
For Term 1, the parent-teacher interviews will be held on Tuesday 28 March. Details have been sent home about how to book (check school stream if you are unsure or give us a call). Parents are invited to attend two formal progress interviews with class teachers each year. I encourage all parents / carers to use this opportunity to check in with your child’s teacher so the details of your child’s learning journey can be shared and celebrated. Your teacher can assist with strategies to reinforce learning at home.
P&C Team
Our AGM was held last week for our 2023 P&C team. I am delighted to announce that the 2022 executive team are continuing with their roles. The P&C plays a vital role to coordinate parent feedback which informs the school's strategic direction in a way that achieves the best learning outcomes for the school's students. Our school community is extremely grateful for the time and effort these parent volunteers give to support our Burnside students to have access to additional resources, learning experiences and fun activities that add to the magic of primary schooling. One of the first big events is a school disco on Friday 8 May 2023 – pop that date on your calendar!
Thank you to our wonderful 2023 P&C team:
Jess Hosking (President)
Megan Ashbrooke-Thomas (Secretary)
Tish Wynn and Kelly Wynn (Vice Presidents)
Naomi Crawford (Treasurer)
Prep to Year 2 Easter Bonnet Parade
The Easter Bonnet Parade will be held on Friday 31 March. What a lovely way to finish a fabulous term of learning for our littlest Burnsiders. Parents are asked to help their child make a bonnet for this occasion. I look forward to seeing lots of our families and friends in attendance to have some fun at the Easter extravaganza.
Before school
We love seeing our Burnsiders coming into school every morning with a happy smile. Please be aware that first bell is at 8.35am and class officially starts at 8.45am. There is no before school duty until 8:15am. For student safety, it is important that arrival at school is not until 8.15am. Students on the early bus wait quietly together in the undercover area near the tuckshop until 8.15am. At 8.15am, the Year 3-6 students are supervised in the tuckshop undercover area and the Prep to Year 2’s are supervised in the undercover area near the central Jacaranda tree and our library. There is no supervision provided after school and students are to make their way promptly home.
Safety of students It is busy at pick up and drop off times. This is the same situation in many schools across Queensland. It is a time that everyone needs to display their safe driving practices and abide by the road rules. Unfortunately there are many vehicles continuing to park on yellow lined areas (particularly near the entrance to our staff carpark and the bus turnaround area), this jeopardises the safety of our students and also attracts expensive fines for drivers if the council officers or police are present. Please be aware that the turn around within the school grounds with the entrance off Blaxland Road is only for parents who have a disability sticker for their child. It is not a general parking area and excessive traffic in this area is again creating a safety concern for our students. Please do the right thing so that we can keep our Burnside kids safe!
Last day of School is on Friday 31st March 2023. We wish all our Burnside Families and community a happy and safe break and see you all back refreshed on Monday 17th April.

Harmony Week
On Tuesday 21st March, Burnside State School will be celebrating Harmony Day.
It is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, and the successful integration of migrants into our community.
Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world and we should celebrate this and work to maintain it.
Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.
Inclusion News
This term the children in ECDP have been focusing on experiencing BELONGING.
Belonging is one of three elements of THE EARLY YEARS LEARNING FRAMEWORK FOR AUSTRALIA.
Experiencing belonging – knowing where and with whom you belong – is integral to human existence. Children belong first to a family. We read stories about families, different types of homes and what living things needs to survive. We created homes for our families, a nest for the birds and a kennel for our dogs. We read Snails Big Adventure by David Earl and discovered snails have their homes on their backs. In early childhood, and throughout life, relationships are crucial to a sense of belonging. Belonging is central to being and becoming in that it shapes who children are and who they can become. A quote from a young person: “I belong in my house with my family”.

BP Connect
BP Connect has been re-scheduled for Wednesday 29 March (please see attached). It was great to get so many of you interested in coming so we hope you are available for this re-scheduled time. The school’s inclusion team are really looking forward to meeting you. Please bring along any questions you may have as well and we can explore these over a cuppa. Looking forward to seeing you.
Home2School
Burnside State School have been seeing a lot of success with our new program Home2School. This program runs from 8.20am until the school bell and allows some students with underlying health issues such as anxiety an opportunity to come and settle in the Inclusion Hub before school. This program developed from a need to provide a quieter area for some students who were experiencing some separation issues.
If you feel this might be a need to access this program (short term as well) then please approach your class teacher who can then liaise with admin. This has become quite a popular little space so we have had to put some procedures around this space. There will be a consent letter to complete and then we will present these at our Student Support Services school meetings on Mondays to prioritise access.
Our wonderful Miss Jenny is available for this time at 8.20 each morning and we ask that you help your child put their bag on the hooks outside and then please encourage them to have a great day as you say goodbye and then they can come to enjoy the Hub. Our goal is for children to settle quickly and we ask that you assist us by not entering or lingering if possible. Children seem to feel very safe and are quite excited and happy to come and enjoy this space.
If you have any questions regarding this program or are keen to access this, please feel free to come and have a chat to discuss.

Chappy Chat
Hey awesome Burnsiders,
If you or someone you know, would like their kids to get involved in a local sporting club, scout group, martial arts, etc, and can't afford club fees and are on a health care card. I have access to some Fair Play vouchers that will cover up to $150 of fees. Alternatively, I can assist anyone who may be interested, to also walk them through the application process themselves online. Below is a link to a PDF of all the local (within a 10km radius) clubs that are on board with the Fair Play voucher program. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to know more at pmurr51@eq.edu.au or contact the school office.
I am continually blown away by the overwhelming display of genuine affection I receive from our young people every time I visit a class. It is an absolute privilege to be able to sit and listen and chat with every student that has something that they are eager to share. I encourage every parent to make sure you give your young person the audience that they so desperately need, without interruption, and you too, will be blown away by the wonder of their often simple, yet profound insights into their world.
Grace & Peace

The Girl of the Moon
By Maya Sandberg
The moon was shining bright
When a blessing came to Earth
A sprinkle of light
Then stepped out the girl of the Moon
A solitary figure
Radiating dim lights
The girl of the Moon
Walking alone with no friends
How horrid it is
Nobody to turn to
Shoulders sagging, silent sniffles
Finding a good friend is hard
But suddenly a chance of hope
A solemn girl walking through the forest
A great friend for her?
A friend for life, forever there.
F.A.T.E.
By Ella Olsson
The world is slowly dying,
Overpopulation, deforestation and war.
Of course, we’re all denying!
The climate change is all we know!
There’s ozone layer depletion,
And this list is on overflow.
Some people describe it as fate.
F.A.T.E. Fairness, Accountability, Transparency and Ethics.
But, I don’t believe it’s fair!
Who’s accountable!
Transparency?
Ethics? Who decides what is right?
Who can we trust?
I’m not proud of how there’s so much better we can be!
Our Future? Really? I clearly DON’T agree…..
